Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) is a national key university under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China, a centrally administered university, and a key construction university of the national “Double First-Class” initiative, Project 211 and Project 985. It has been selected into the 111 Plan for discipline innovation and talent introduction, the Plan for Innovating University Capacity Building, the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan, the state-funded graduate student program for building high-level universities, the National College Students' Innovative Experiment Program, the national college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training program, new engineering research and practice projects, and is a host institution for Chinese government scholarship students, and a base for university S&T achievement transformation and technology transfer. It is a member of the MIIT Universities Alliance, the National Defense-Oriented Universities Curriculum Ideological-Political Education Alliance, the China Artificial Intelligence Education Council, the Excellent Universities Alliance, and the Yanhe Universities Talent Cultivation Alliance.
The predecessor of Beijing Institute of Technology was the Yan'an Natural Sciences Institute founded in 1940. Through periods as the Industrial Specialized School of the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Border Region and the College of Engineering of North China University, it was established in Beijing in 1949 and absorbed the headquarters and the mathematics, physics and chemistry departments of Sino-French University. It was renamed Beijing College of Industry in 1952 and then Beijing Institute of Technology in 1988.
