The Northwest Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was founded in Beijing in 1957, moved to Baotou in 1966, and relocated to Xianyang in 1969. It was among the first batch of key national defense scientific research institutions planned and built after the founding of New China. The institute attaches great importance to building scientific research capability and actively constructs an equipment research system. It has successively built nearly 20 modern laboratories, with continuously improving scientific research, experiment and test capabilities; many of its R&D conditions are at domestic leading or internationally advanced levels. Among them, the testing and calibration laboratory and the software testing laboratory have both obtained national/defense accreditation. While meeting its own scientific research needs, the institute can also provide technical services to the market such as environmental testing, component screening and inspection, and software testing.
